Gregg Wallace, a former greengrocer, said the country"s obsession with the weekly shop was stopping people thinking about what they were going to eat for each meal.

Rather, they just ate what was in their cupboards, he said.

"How does anybody on a Saturday morning know what they want for dinner on a Thursday evening?" he asked.

"Definitely people on the continent don"t understand that concept. People in Australia say hello to their butcher in the morning and then pick some meat for dinner on the way home."

He accused supermarkets of fostering the idea of the weekly shop for their own gain.

"I think it"s probably supermarket jargon that has become part of the national psyche," he said.

Wallace, 45, who presents the programme with John Torode, 44, also criticised them for encouraging bulk-buy deals such as "buy-on-get-one-free" offers, which have been blamed for increasing the amount of food which is thrown away by households.

MasterChef, which pits amateurs against each other, returned to BBC One on Thursday night for the start of its sixth series.
